PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Waste?
Documentary seeks stories in your community about individuals, who recycle waste to survive, create art, raise money, or build businesses.
Boston, MA, April 2, 2008— Dave Rizzotto, a filmmaker and digital media consultant, and Shantel Hansen, an intercultural recruiter, are partnering to film a documentary called Waste? The film will document people repurposing and living off waste, while exploring the historical context and psychology of how we perceive waste in a consumer-driven society.
"We will feature individuals taking positive action with scenes such as canners scouring the streets for redeemables to artists refining glass bottles into mosaics to architects constructing homes out of tires," said Rizzotto. "The intended audience reaction is to enable viewers to reflect on their relationship with waste, recycling habits, and their consumption rates versus needs."
Driven by a consumer society, buying packaged material has become the norm. As a result, individuals have lost touch with product origins and the impact of their consumption.
"We will explore what motivates people to reuse waste through conversations with garbage anthropologists, sociologist, and environmentalists," stated Hansen. "These interviews will serve as a thread to the individual stories, creating a foundation of both cultural and factual evidence."
Newbury Film Series, Inc. (NFS), a not-for-profit in the Greater Boston Area, is the fiscal agent for this project. "Raising funds to produce non-commercial media can be a challenge," stated Brian Tinger, a NFS board member. "With our tax-exempt status, we are able to help projects attract donors by offering a 100% tax deduction on all contributions."
The producers of this film seek to interview individuals who reuse or recycle waste to survive, create art, raise money, or build businesses. They will be conducting interviews from April – July in states including: NM, AZ, CA, OR, ID, CO, NE, WI, IL, MI, NY
